ALP have mentioned bio fuels on numerous occasions during the campaign.

Labor supports the development and use of alternative fuels in
Australia.

The development of alternative fuel production in Australia has the
potential to reduce our dependence on imported oil. These alternatives
include bio fuels such as ethanol and bio diesel and as well as gas to
liquids and coal to liquids technologies.

Labor recognises the potential benefits of greater bio fuel use for
Australia's agricultural sector, boosting employment and addressing
climate change.

That is why Labor supports the current excise free arrangements for
domestically produced bio fuels, including ethanol.

Labor also supports the current grants paid to producers and retailers
of bio fuels, to help them cover the capital costs of setting up
production facilities and converting petrol retail sites to sell bio
fuels.

Labor believes consumers should have the right to choose blended fuels,
including petrol-ethanol blends, when filling up their cars. That is why
Labor supports the clear labelling of bio fuels and blended fuels.

Labor also recognises the concerns over the competition with food crops
to provide the feedstock to current bio fuel production technologies.

Labor acknowledges the potential of second generation bio fuel
technologies which may become viable over the next five to ten years and
will generate ethanol from wood waste and other cellulose material.
Labor supports the development and deployment of these technologies.
