I know it was a scam only when it was reported and investigated, people actually saw the reality... Till such time people believed in BIG, it was one of the best performing darling stocks of the stock market....
As with all other scams and problems, the problem is that by the time scams, fraud or corruption is discovered, the damage more often than not has been done.
