Once upon a time I held shares in CTO and RSG. Lost money (not much)on CTO & made a very modest profit on RSG. Left the gold sector alone for years and wisely too. Not enough production, operating costs forever increasing and over the top director fees. Understand that tipsters Digger & Driller say "sell". Good advice. Now have only one gold holding and that's in SBL and it's damn small. Physical gold in the form of Kruger Rands (or simillar) is another option.
