I'm no mining expert Wol but if you have to mine 100 tons of ore and put it through a mill to get 1 ton of nickel i.e.1% grade
Or you mine and put through the same 100 tons and get 4tons of nickel i.e. 4% grade... Which one do you think would be more profitable?
It is not as cut and dry as that but the costs are obviously going to come down with better grades.
