The rules are being changed because the system was no longer working. And by that I mean free markets coupled with naked short selling, driven by fear, manipulated by many "could" lead to something far worse than any modern depression, it could lead to the end of the US financial system as we know it.
What sort of an effect would a complete collapse have on Australia and the rest of the world? I don't think I really need to go into all the details on that one as we all have superfunds. LOL
In my opinion far greater regulation of our markets is required in order to put into place an even playing field were everyone is trading/investing knowing what the other guy is doing. Short sell by all means but naked short sell without disclosing to the market who you are and what your position is and what your motives are leads to manipulation or perceived manipulation and as far as I'm aware that's illegal.
