Banks have been traditional targets for cheap political vote catching given their position within the economy/profitability at the expense of the mums and dads ? and so on. They also get an attack of the shivers when polies start promising much to much which requires debt.
The latter would ,if it ever happened would place pressure on interest rates, which in turn undermines bank profitability.
Going back to the late 40's, the labor party has had a love/hate relationship with the banks, but they tend to perform better under the conservatives.
In addition, elections create general uncertainty, and that is not good for the market as a whole.
Cheers,TAS (I am not that old, but read a lot!LOL)
