Currently the Blugen has to be connected to the grid because all the power it produces must be "consumed" so to speak or it will damage the unit. It takes a number of hours for the unit to ramp and and also to shut down properly. It would have emergency shut down but most likely this will shorten the life of the fuel cell.
However power output of the unit can be modulated remotely within certain limits. This makes it ideal as a sort of supplementary base line supply for the grid and not suited as a sole supply to the highly volitile demand of a single household.
