American business magazine Forbes has named its top-200 publicly traded companies in the Asia-Pacific region, with revenues less than $1 billion. The list has 84 nominees from mainland China and the investment hub of Hong Kong, while Australia has just 9 nominees.
Forbes says it screened 17,000 companies to compile the list and that the winners produced the highest sales and earnings per share growth for the most recent financial one and three-year periods. The winners also posted the strongest five-year average return on equity, while other key metrics like debt, profitability, management and liquidity were taken into account.
If Forbes Asia’s Best Under A Billion (BUB) list is any indication, the performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises should quell concern over the recent downward pressure on China’s economy.
To compile the BUB list we screened 17,000 publicly traded companies in the Asia-Pacific region with sales between $5 million and $1 billion. Roughly 810 passed our criteria for profitability, growth, and modest indebtedness. The resulting 200 are un-ranked but comparatively produced the highest sales and earnings per share growth for both the most recent fiscal one and three-year periods, and the strongest five-year average return on equity. Consistent growth in these measured performance metrics is key. One off year puts a company in jeopardy. We excluded companies thinly traded, those trading less than a year, and those with worrisome accounting, management, ownership or legal troubles.
