Jawdropper,
Perhaps good or bad but here is a different angle.
Maybe a 25% ownership by the Govt. would ensure that QAN has its house in order and has some guarantees re debt. This would also help QAN to access cheaper funds to expand. SP is also currently a good one for government to step in. The govt keeps saying how important QAN is to our transport needs, why not have a say in it and how it is run? They could help ensure that the right management are put in place rather than jobs for the boys type stuff that has seen QAN management run this company straight into a mountain at 36,000ft( for want of better words).
The government could also encourage QAN to expand its in-house skills base rather than shrink it by encouraging training/employment programs that match technical skill training with the airlines needs. IMO, this would be a better option than the government sitting back and paying unemployed QAN workers our valued tax dollars to front up at Centrelink every fortnight.
The issue of QAN losing all of its skills and expertise is critical to the future of QAN and it is an issue that needs to be addressed asap, if not, there will come a point down the track when it is too late to try and re-introduce these skilled jobs when all has been shipped offshore.
One other issue, QAN has not employed Pilots for sometime now and no new recruits are currently in any type of training. IMO, the day will come (if QAN does ever expand again) that QAN will suddenly need large numbers of skilled pilots at short notice to cover expansion and attrition of current pilots. Problem is, most skilled pilots will be working elsewhere.
