He opposes giving them lots of money for doing nothing, prefers to train them, educate them, give them jobs and give their companies contracts which will help long term bring them out of poverty. FMG has awarded contracts and subcontracts worth a total value of more than A$3 billion to 132 Aboriginal businesses.

I would have thought that western capitalism and law requires consensual agreements regarding use of ones land and a just sharing of the value flowing from that use and compensation for damage done. Employment requires payment of wages and training provided. Contracts require offer and acceptance and a semblance of equal standing. These are three different types of legal relationship each with its own legal obligations.

Apart from law, as Australians we need to also respect the lore of our indigenous people. Care needs to be taken in applying/imposing western concepts of laziness, poverty, education on a people who developed a very successful way of living in their environment. Humility, as a minimum standard, suggests we do not impose these things. The alternative is colonialism, have we not moved on from that?
