Former Queensland mines minister Tony McGrady is lobbying the federal ALP to drop its three mines policy.

Mr McGrady now works as a part-time adviser to a company wanting to mine uranium in the Mount Isa area.

He quit state politics at the last election.

At least 13 companies are believed to have exploration permits to look for uranium in Queensland.

Mr McGrady says the issue should be raised at Labor's federal conference this weekend.

"Nobody can justify to me why the state of South Australia can mine uranium and Queensland can't," he said.

"The three mines policy introduced many years ago at the time was an answer to a very difficult problem but times have passed and we have to be adult and mature and I think the policy has to go.

"If uranium mining is wrong, it should be wrong right across the Commonwealth."
