I am not commenting on where we are I am commenting on the trajectory. I think the 'traditional'path from friendship to parenthood was probably still the norm in 1961.

By 1971 things had changed. We had Vietnam, LSD, marijuana, the age of Aqarius and free love. Social security for all and Lionel Murphy.

By 1981 my recollection is that the normal course was living together before getting married, but you still got married.

By 1991 a great many Single Mums. Lots of Family Court unhappiness.

By 2001 marriage was as quaint as a cake stall outside of a church. But still the usual practice of societies leaders.

By 2011 we are led by an unmarried PM, sleeping with her 'First'man. She is in power with a coalition partner led by a chap also sleeping with his 'first'man. Our PM doesn't believe in God.

We have moved a long way in 40 years, more than we would have imagined. I wonder what's next.
