I think that the US is paranoid about gold because the USD is based upon being seen as being legitimate. Gold is an alternative currency that was once legitimate.

Its like an evil king that has usurped a throne. The thing that he wants most is to ensure the banished king is dead.

So the US has a very good reason to be paranoid about gold. The USD being the global currency has allowed them to do some wonderous stuff for their own nation.
