People thinking that aluminum is needed for EV'S are on the right track but most major car manufacturers have been switching various models over to aluminum for many years now. A memorable one was the Ford F150 that in or around 2014 was fully switched over and thus gave the vehicle a payload gain of several hundred pounds (poss 800) and bam it became the No1 seller in North America for the next 3-5 years. Cadillac is aluminum as are many many more, some would surprise most of us.
Now a quick search shows the top ten automobile producers in the world are (2019 figures).
China (25.72 million)
United States (10.88 million)
Japan (9.68 million)
Germany (4.66 million)
India (4.51 million)
Mexico (3.99 million)
South Korea (3.95 million)
Brazil (2.94 million)
Spain (2.82 million)
France (2.20 million)
Total = 71.35M
This equates to approximately 35 MT of bauxite per year and one would expect 90+% of all cars will be aluminum in the next few years and of course lets not forget electric trucks expected to cross over. EV'S will and is happening as we speak and it's pace and size will surprise many.
An iconic photo taken from a tall building of a Chicago street when cars were first introduced showed thousand upon thousands of horses with carts and only a couple of cars, a photo was then taken 12 months to the day later showing no horses and jam packed with cars.
It is happening quickly and let's not forget the emerging aluminum high output batteries being worked on with testing showing the aluminum-ion batteries could store as much as three times more energy as lithium cells. Mahindra Electric out of India is currently testing an Israeli Aluminum-Air Battery with faster charging times and weighing a lot less so predicting bauxite demand is a hard game to play as we could see demand ramp up very suddenly.
