    Nowadays you can shut down the phone and sim to stop anyone using it if you have lost it.

    So if that has been done, the owner can't ring it.

    Agree if you open it up and see which telco the sim card belongs to, take it in to them (or the police) and they can notify the owner.

    Easy as that..
