Hi all.
I live in the Scenic Rim area. Absolutely beautiful part of the country, as I'm sure Lautrec would agree.
Amazing how much of this recent anti-gas sentiment is based on a viewing of 'Gasland' alone (not saying it all is, but a lot of it is). It's like saying, "Hey man, I know everything about outer space. I mean, I've watched all the 'Star Wars' movies."
Let's not forget that there are also many people of the land who welcome the gas industry, as long as it is done properly.
Recently caught myself being a bit of a NIMBY when it was announced that the federal government considered turning the Kooralbyn Resort into a detention centre. Not meaning to discuss the rights or wrongs of detention centres, but I certainly would not want to live near one.
Whatever the issue, whether it be gas, nuclear, wind, detention centres, hydro, etc, there will be opposition. I feel the thing that has strengthened opposition to gas is the QLD government's ludicrous decision to shut down the Cougar UCG operation in Kingaroy. This opened the flood gates and has no doubt given protesters the idea that they have the power. Drew Hutton was involved there.
What I find quite incredible is that a coal mine is being proposed in Rathdowney (right in the heart of the Scenic Rim) and barely a peep has been made about it:

I'd much rather live by a gas field than a coal mine
