I thought this edition of 4 Corners was excellent & provided material that certainly assists us to understand the details of Kevin Rudd's loss of his prime ministership.

IMO it confirms that those who worked to remove Rudd were calculating, ruthless & highly effective. Other issues of disloyalty, inability to perform to Rudd's expectations etc. may also have been crucial.

But as Julia Gillard is discovering, in deposing Rudd the plotters set the benchmarks by which they also are now being judged.

It's difficult to see how Gillard's ongoing failure to make quality connections to mainstream Australians can be reversed. The only factors in her favour are the excesses of big players seeking to discredit her & public dissatisfaction with Tony Abbott. If the latest Newspoll is accurate she may even be losing on that score as well.

If Rudd genuinely wants to return as PM he would however be ill-advised to make a pre-emptive move on Gillard since time is now on his side & all the political challenges are on Gillard's plate.

I remain of the view that if polls do not improve for Gillard once the MRRT / CT-ETS tax cuts etc. are delivered that she will either step down voluntarily or face annihilation in Caucus.
