Baldy has it. A lot of this discussion was worked through on the IFN batteries thread,
K2W is a superior option to KS and deserves to be much larger. Daytime solar prices up there are already negative - why build into that!
Better to pump those free solar volts up the hill all day and sell them back at premium prices into the morning and evening peaks. As the evening peak is larger and longer, a thoughtful combination of 24 hour wind and free daytime solar volts would see KPH working its little butt off morning and night.
On the PPA, better to contract the most reliable portion of production (which is what a PPA is) to eg Qld government while sending the intermittent and low value generation to KPH, again to sell into the peaks.
Then back to my grievance with GNX. It has sold operatorship to EA and must transact at arms length. So EA will be harvesting K2W intermittent and low value generation, not GNX. Divided ownership will haunt Kidston forever. This because founders wanted to avoid dilution. Well, IMHO, this setup is worse.
Kidston is a brilliant project. Shame really.
