This just rubs me the wrong way. You would assume genuine refugees would not be a security risk, i.e. they would be in total compliance as they would be thankful for finally being out their own hellhole of a country and in safe hands.

Refugees espacing are obviously prone to criminal activity and you have to wonder how many more boatpeople are like this if given the chance???

"Refugees give guards the slip at Villawood detention centre

FOUR detainees have escaped from Sydney's Villawood detention centre in the past month, sending the refugee program lurching towards crisis point.

And a fresh wave of Sri Lankan boat people are expected to make the direct - and treacherous - ocean voyage to Australia, adding to pressure on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's border protection policies.

UK security firm Serco, which is paid $370 million to manage seven detention centres, sacked 10 guards after the Villawood bungle.

One detainee is said to have escaped by strapping himself Indiana Jones-like to the bottom of a truck carrying building supplies.

Another man from Ghana went free after being let outside to pray at a nearby church.

The four escapees remain on the loose with both the NSW Police and Immigration officials trying to track them down.

Serco may be fined for the breach with Immigration Minister Chris Evans demanding answers, saying it was "not acceptable".

As the refugee problem builds for Labor, Senator Evans was yesterday forced to defend the weekend transfer of 89 asylum seekers from Christmas Island to Sydney.

He denied overcrowding at the offshore centre was behind Saturday's flight.

But he concedes the boat people surge - almost 1500 so far this year - may continue.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison called the Government "border protection sceptics" and said it was "scrambling" to make room on Christmas Island, which is close to capacity.

Meanwhile, thousands of Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka are preparing to risk the 5000km voyage to Australian waters as soon as weather conditions improve.

Their arrival would ensure the refugee issue featured at this year's election for the first time since the 2001 Tampa poll.

Senior naval sources claim people smugglers will bypass the traditional route through Indonesia or Malaysia in favour of the riskier route direct to Christmas Island.

It is understood senior Sri Lankan naval figures directly warned their Australian counterparts of the looming humanitarian crisis during high-level talks a month ago.

Senior navy sources said they were told several refugee boats set sail for Australia from northeastern Sri Lanka last year but had not been heard from since.
