Hi Occam, I may be giving the Labor Party too much credit , but they may well know that there is limited money to be had from this proposal, at least as far as smsfs are concerned. Their motivations could be quite different from what is obvious.
ie
1. some political theatre prior to the recent byelection
2. this measure has more bight if used in association with taxing trusts as companies, and also hits dividends from small private companies[I cast my mind back to my children when at university]
3. it may be something they can "give away" as a policy ,as a trade off for some other super initiative , say a tax on distributions
4. possible also that it being done at the behest of their union backers to benefit industry funds
Anyway, the strategy for me, is likely to involve partial use of an industry fund.
