the vast majority of backpackers that I have observed, just think of fraser as a different/scenic spot to get hammered at.. seriously, they drink to excess, feed the dingoes, leave rubbish wherever they go.. Ask any of the islands residents about them. No one is denying they are a cash cow for tourist operators - mainly the 4wd operators on the mainland, who cram 8 - 10 of them in a troop carrier and un-leash them on the island. Often with tragic consequences, ie rollovers are very common...
I apologise in advance for being negative, but I have witnessed fraser island being loved to death, esp by the european backpackers, who see it as just another stop on the bp trail up the east coast...
