Human nature and ego.
We are programmed to seek out a bargain and try and be the one who buys the bottom.
If we put our ego's aside and admit we don't know where the bottom (or top) is, we have a better chance of surviving in the market. Trouble is our society places no value on the ability to admit we're wrong. Just look at our pollies.
Just a bit of philosophical insight (but I may be wrong).
