"The best way to help is to show them the ladder and get out of the way. The Aborigines are asset rich but live in squalor. Let them have their assets to split amongst themselves and have individual ownership.
Some will build houses and stay. Many will sell their land and move to the city like waves of other country dwellers all over the world. Given the financial choice many will make the rational choice to leave areas with no jobs, prospects etc."
I have to admit...........I have no answers. But I'm sure Noel Pearson would be horrified to hear that land/assets were going to be split up amongst individuals. Within a decade, 90% of all the land they have managed to wrangle back through land rights would be sold to the highest bidders, and the money wasted on unnecessary items. And I'm not having a go at aboriginals, it's just in their nature. They haven't learnt to save. They've always gorged in the good times and struggled in the hard times. That's the way they've lived for thousands of years.
That way of life was, in one respect, true freedom.....they never worried about having to pay a mortgage, or think about higher education to help them with their careers.
And of course, then there's the huge hurdle of actually dividing the land.........No one can agree on who owns it. Even when native title has been handed down, in a lot of cases it's gone to the mob who made the most noise and who had the most support from the various government departments like the ALS or the KLC. What you dont hear is the stories about the mobs who ended up with nothing.
The problems facing oil and gas companies in the KImberley isn't as straight forward as everyone sees on the TV either........it's not just the aborigines arguing over whether they should let a gas company use their land.........they're still arguing over who's land it actually is.
Like Towie says........a lot more Noel Pearson's are needed.
At the moment they are forced to stay by socialist theory. Give them title to their property.
