MORE than 100,000 commuters a day will have free wireless internet access at Flinders St station from next month.
In an Australian first, the wi-fi service will allow thousands of smartphone, tablet and laptop-armed travellers to access the web from the main concourse and platforms.
But the opportunity to log on and surf the net will come at a price -- advertising.
Users will be required to provide their age and gender details, which will trigger a burst of ads.
The service does not extend to moving trains, an option considered too expensive at this stage.
Metro spokeswoman Geraldine Mitchell said if the three-month trial proved a hit, free internet access would be rolled out to all stations on the City Loop.
