Q. What's the difference between potency and selectivity of a drug?
Potency refers to the required quantity of a drug. The more potent the drug, the less is required to achieve a given effect, e.g. 50% inhibition of a chemical reaction.
Selectivity refers to off-target effects or unwanted side effects. The more selective a drug is, the less the off-target effects. For example, a selective FTO inhibitor doesn't inhibit any other m6A mRNA erasers.
The paper by Su et al, Cancer Cell, June 2020 (at CoH) found that bisantrene (which they call CS1) is both potent and selective as an FTO inhibitor. This paper has already been cited over 100 times, which shows that FTO inhibition and the search for suitable drugs is a very hot topic.
