In my former life, I worked for a while in Korea. We/they were doing a deal with an insurance company who wanted to venture into the broker-dealer business. Over lunch one day, I recall him telling me that in the 'old days' the policy holders had to put their thumb print on the claims. Many Korean Won payments later, they figured out that there were quite a few people who had passed away, that were missing their thumbs... and still claiming... True, true.
