Think Gardenia's are pretty sensitive to too much water @bluesky52 maybe they need to be very well drained. Have seen them growing where they get no water for 6 months of the year and survive. Do have a border of an Australian Gardenia ground cover but unfortunately no smell will try to post a photo when l eventually get home.
