There is some theory to suggest they are a tool for somebody with a large holding to exit without affecting the share price and take advantage of exiting at Vwap. How does that work for a stock with small variations in price? I believe is to suppresses the price by putting off investors. Who wants to buy and then 3 minutes later you have lost 5% of your investment. So your next thought as an investor is to jump in the que on the sell side of the bot which is fine and probably just what somebody wanted you to do so they can wait for the bid volume to increase high enough for them to exit.
What are the options for somebody to unload lots of shares,
Jump in the sell que at the ask price and build the wall.
Sell below the ask price.
Use a bot to manipulate buyers to build and sell to them.
