I agree, the 87 crash was a real crash in as much as it just dumped on 20-10-087 with panic selling and no stock exchange lock downs.
In 1990 Japan was riding a massive bubble economy. Land was worth ridiculous amounts in places like Tokyo and their surplus from their exports was such that they appeared to be taking over the world, much as China is starting to resemble?
It was clearly unsustainable and commercial real estate collapsed to a fraction of those valuations. Now, as you say, it's a different place and a different economy but the root cause of the collapse was much the same as the US today.
