In the aftermath, were you confident of living another 50 years? Sounds like you may have had an angel on your shoulder.
My mother in law, passed at 94, was a prisoner of war transported to a Russian forced labour camp towards the end of WW2 and for 2 years after the war ended … she was emaciated when finally freed … she was a refuge to Australia in 1948 with husband … she never talked about that period in Russia and nobody pried … I oft wished an angel could have landed on her shoulder and whispered in her ear in her darkest moments how well things would work out.
