The British pound is sliding this morning against the dollar after the Financial Times reported that the Bank of England will bail out troubled mortgage lender Northern Rock by providing emergency funding.

However, the central bank's assistance should ease the uncertainty over Northern Rock, which hasn't been able to get access to the wholesale funding on which it is heavily dependent.
