there is no reason why australia cannot make lithium batteries cheaper & better than korea or japan if only local companies would be more aspirational.
the real problem lies in local lithium mining co's having convinced themselves that they should stick to what theyve always done, just ship the basics off-shore and leave it at that.
meaning; advanced manufacturing and the really big profits will always remain in asia.
australia must accelerate its capacity in the production of cathodes, foils as well lith chemicals and not just ship out the raw materials.
through the vertical integration of our rare earths and material resources this country could easily out-compete both the koreans and japan who must rely on austalian minerals.
if our facilities were then fully powered by renewables this alone would give australia an advantage over other nations even with a high wage.

our universities play an integral part of this and need to revolutionise the way they administer ground-breaking innovations then spin them out into the corporate sector often at great disadvantage to the very innovators who developed them. as in big corporates with big ceo's takeover the whole thing leaving those scientists-engineers out in the cold.
our universities tend to give the innovators a small piece of the action, while allowing the big boys to move on in, then call this a successful commercial enterprise for the university.
stanford university has a program that allows innovators to gain far more substantially than the aussie ones do. which incentivises more students to take on research roles more often. allowing the pioneers to make a negotiate an outcome for their idea before the university takes out equity in the new venture.

australian universities also need to make battery science part of their curriculums. material science, chemistry and electrochemistry degrees are what's needed here if australia wants a key part in this new future. as well govt funding toward building manufacturing plants.

or we can remain a nation of rock apes forever!
