Pixie - overall it's a good thing, this is a case of those pesky humans being curious and inventive, it's what we do.

This is research at the moment and not a commercial operation that is competing against us, but having said that Ceramic Fuels started as a research project too!)

The researchers also used a very similar SOFC to those used by Ceramic Fuels - a combination of zirconia and strontium compounds - the difference is in the structures at the interface of the materials within the cell (the lattice) which allows the ions to pass through more readily (an ion is an atom or molecule with a positive or negative charge).

One of the main benefits from this research is the possibility of SOFC working at much lower temperatures which seems better for the longevity of the fuel cell - however the majority of our 'cupboards' are likely to operate from a domestic supply of natural gas as the fuel source so lower temperatures are not necessarilly an issue.

Research will continue on fuel cells for a long time to come, we are a bit beyond the Model T Ford but maybe not quite up to the Aston DB7 - which is exactly what I want when these 'cupboards' come into production!
