There seems to be plenty of supply of fresh meat and veg.

The price gouging seems much less in the local butcher and green grocer.
Although with sausages now $19.99/kg around here I will be spending
    more at the fish market.

Apparently in NZ local butchers and green grocers have been closed.
So the big supermarkets hold power over the NZ government. They will
drive the small businesses out, control supply and their wholesale cost
while further gouging the retail customer.

The Australian government is probably crawling up the lobbyists' arses
    as I write.

I am beginning to suspect the supply of less perishable items is being artificually
    restricted.

It isn't a conspiracy, just the strong feeding off the weak.
