    Tomatoes suffer from nematodes that build up in the soil, they attack the roots of the plants and they do poorly. That is why you need to grow marigolds with them. Dwarf ones are best. They have an enzyme that kills the nematodes. Let them flower and self seed. They will be there continuously. As they mature dig them into the soil. Use plenty of manures. Poultry is best because the urates are combined with the faeces. Horse stable manure next best as the same applies. Tomatoes can be grown hydroponically but they never have the same flavor. You also need some sulphate of potash

    I also grow Tigerella. They are a smallish tomato but they are reasonably resistant to pests and taste OK. There are other Heritage ones that do OK as well. Grosse Lisse are another good one to grow. Both of these can be grown from your own seed. I just plant a squashed tomato back into the garden to have a continuous supply.
