Seems to me that the model is essentially the providing of services to dentists, not the acquiring of practices, which is secondary and could halt without the business ceasing.
Service providing, as part of specialization and division of labour, is fundamental to advanced economies and even to moderately developed ones and cannot be called "flawed".
