re: elysian- fullguy changes his name by deed poll However, while the consonants of the name are known, the vowels to be combined with the consonants, are a bit of a question , for, Vowels did not come into use in Hebrew until the second half halfof the first millenium CE....

    I think you are incorrect.

The same Hebrew.....spoken today is the same Hebrew as in the Old Testament, more commonly referred to an Lashon Hakodesh...The Holy Toungue.

Of course modern words have crept in, but the same 22 letters of the Aleph-bet....exist today.......the very same.

The vowels in Hebrew are not like those in English.....For example in English we have A E I O U

Hebrew does not allocate letters as vowels per se....rather dots or strokes.

However those of us who can read proficiently don't require those signs to ley us know how the vowel is to be pronounced, that is the A E I O U sound. Look at all the Israel papers...None of them have the dots or trhe dashes.

Prayer books on the other hand do...And that is to make it easier for those who don't know how to read or pronouince the word correctly.

The Talmud on the other hand does not.....and that is the way all the kids are taught the Talmud...although I have seen some easy versions with the dots and dashes.....similar to an introduction for Dummies to Talmud....maily for little kids who don't come into much contact with their Hebrew language and this have difficulty discerning one word for another....akin to expaling to a kid.....when to read ......read as reed....or as red.
