I would say they are dividers, it would make sense if they had to be replaced, got damaged or different phases of concentration techniques, 1 big pond fed into a smaller one, refill big drain into 2nd smaller one, etc. Or maybe the concentrate from the small 1 is a batch size when fully concentrated. I think Pablo has the expertise, we discovered this when he placed original ponds and avoid rainfall run-off.
