Yes, Acees, I also think that the key issue is whether BR thinks it is a commercial proposition to continue to develop the PTO unit. I didn’t want to open that can of worms in the post above.
When the announcement of the multi- collaboration first appeared it included the statement that the fractional scale unit would shortly be tested in Germany. This was a clear indication that much prior work by BR had already occurred. Did this mean that CWE had come into the arrangement later? If so, does that indicate that the ‘other partners’ already knew that Aquamarine was ‘down sizing’ and BR needed some guarantee that another wave power company would use its PTO? Hence the introduction of CWE.
I suspect that BR was /is financing the PTO development entirely, on the understanding that it would be used (purchased) for WECs on the expanded Wave Hub and West Ireland projects and thus gradually recoup its costs.
MO at a later meeting said that, “If they (BR) can’t do it then we will do it ourselves.” I puzzled long over what that might actually mean. Since I don’t believe that BR cannot do it, the alternative interpretation is that the group arrangement is very loose and the development of the PTO is up to BR establishing its own priorities. That leaves the other partners somewhat in limbo. We need a confirming statement from CWE.
An aside: When I was poring over some photographs of the Bio-Power Systems’ PTO inner workings (many months ago) I couldn’t help but notice the nameplate of Bosch Rexroth. I couldn’t tell whether this was on a major or a minor part of their set up. Could it be that BR has already produced a smaller version of PTO? CWE wouldn’t let on until a 1 MW unit was ready for testing or supply.
Apologies: In the absence of definite anns I can only give the above ruminations.
