But what about this statement .....
< Why a multi-search engine, rather than individual search engines?
While some individual search engines are particularly effective and sophisticated, none are entirely comprehensive. NEC Research Institute has found and that is, individual search engines cover only a small portion of the available Web, and their coverage provides a low percent of overlap. And, the individual search engines may not be update very often. For example, Altavista is updated every 9-10 days, while Lycos is updated hourly. The spider programs used to update databases are not very fast. Excite's spider search takes up to 28 days to complete it's work, while in comparison, Magellan's takes 4 days.
It is estimated that over 77 percent of Web users use multiple search sites to find information, according to NPD Online Research. Perhaps Web users have discovered what the NEC Research Institute has found and that is, individual search engines cover only a small portion of the available Web, and their coverage provides a low percent of overlap.
The multiple (meta) search engines search more than one search site at a time and provides a much broader range of information more quickly. >
MMmm??? "For example, Altavista is updated every 9-10 days, while Lycos is updated hourly."
< Lycos is updated hourly > I do find that interesting .....??
David Hills said (in the CC) that "Looksmart NOW look at 600 Million rows of Data every 24 hrs, watch revenues on an hourly basis ....."
Nup ... That's a reference to revenues, hourly ... but ???
David Hills (also) said .......
" This large Media Company has bought everything, that was NOT 'bolted down'. They bought 'SEARCH Content' because they wanted to 'drive their own search'. They bought 'the crawler', because they wanted to drive their OWN search site. They bought 'the Advertisor Centre', (along with the 15 most recent improvements), because they wanted to start to deal with their OWN advertisers, in search." And, about Furl.Net .... he said, (& I just 'love' it!) ................ "That Furl.Net can provide applications that are tightly woven into a Publishers life" !!
So ....... Why wouldn't Lycos want the SAME deal ?? - (IF they have NOT already taken it??)
It is certainly starting to happen, IMO !! - David Hills has things 'on the move', for sure !!
