If sothen your memory is faulty. It was indeed a nasty accident, caused by abreakdown of the fluoridation system.
Hundredsin hospital? No. Only one is mentioned as having been hospitalised.
Theamount of fluoride estimated was 150 mg per liter (i.e.150 ppm). The lower level you mention, of 100 ppm, is not in the article.

Thearticle was by Hoffman et al, not Hoffison.
Again,there was a breakdown in the fluoridation system. Concentrations were as highas 375 ppm. "The symptoms of patients in this outbreak were extremelymild."
Nevertheless theauthors correctly warn against "The recent introduction ofpleasant-tasting fluoridated mouthwashes containing concentrations of NaF from200 to 900 ppm."

Iguess you are referring to an article in Public Health Report (1997) Sep-Oct;112(5): 403–409.
Thefluoride content may indeed have been as low as 40 ppm in some restaurant andice samples, but what was the high ppm measured? It was water in a tap that wasmeasured at 200 ppm.
14people reported to the emergency department of the local hospital, but all weredischarged later than day.

Thiseruption, in 1783, is very different from the previous cases. Laki spewed out afew million tons of hydrogen fluoride. Some deaths of humans and cattle were due to the fact that hydrogen fluoride produces a horribly corrosive liquid - hydrofluoric acid. As well, fluorosis of bones and teeth did many humans and animals.

So, whileI don't deny that excess fluoride can kill, I doubt that anybody will drink GGG's tailings dam or obsessively lick their fingers after handling rocks at Kvanefjeld.
Inother words, I see little point in describing fluoride as deadly - as though we are talking of the Russian Novichok poison used in Salisbury, England.
