They have a history of sheltering and shuffling around child rapists but are supposedly trying to do something about it.
Perhaps if he had refused to come to Australia and face the charges it might have been construed as an admission of guilt.
Anyway the legal process hasn't finished but his position at the Vatican basically ended when he was charged, IMHO.
