Semi Submersible is a kind of offshore drilling rig.
The main types used offshore are Semi Submersibles, Jackups or Drill ships. Generally speaking, shallower water under say 400 meters is Jackup territory and then Semi Subs with Drill ships typically reserved for deep water (over 2km). If you google them you'll find plenty of info I only know this as I've worked on them in Australia.
So looks like Ocean rig Athena is a drill ship and is what was used for SNE-1 and FAN-1
