The two year grace period for EV manufacturers to find non Chinese BAM is a positive and a negative.

Negative because it gives the car makers a little bit of breathing room where they may feel less obliged to finance the development of graphite mines.

Positive because this is the result of car manufacturers requesting an extension, they said it’s impossible to get graphite at volume from markets outside of China within the administrations time frames. This is further incentive for the governments grants.

All the work that has been done to build a battery materials supply chain outside of China would go to waste if they were still restricted by the Chinese control of graphite. Keep in mind that this is all about stopping a singular country (China) from controlling an entire sector (battery supply chain)

As pointed out by the geezer in Tassys post above, this is a proper juxtaposition. China is seemingly putting downward pressure on prices, america is trying to take a share of the market from China but financing projects has become difficult under these price conditions. America is forcing car manufacturers to obtain graphite products from outside of China putting upward pressure on graphite prices (hasn’t yet come into affect because it’s not possible to do so yet)

North American graphite miners have started lobbying the administration to add the higher section 301 tariff. This will add a 25% tax to graphite products from China, this should also push prices north. The administration’s decision is scheduled to be made this month.

Benchmark mineral intelligence has created an additional graphite price. This is because they believe that graphite will trade at two prices around the world. Our mineral is caught in an economic war between two superpowers.

Investing in graphite has been a wild ride and the story isn’t over yet. I believe the addition of a tarrif and government grants from America and Europe will shine some light on this mineral.
