fuziah salleh’s unclean hands

Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh wants a detailed environment impact assessment (DEIA) produced before the Lynas Advanced Material Plant (LAMP) is granted an operating licence.
This, she said, was in light of the prescribed activities list requiring a DEIA which was amended on June 20 to include “activities using radioactive material and generation of radioactive waste”.

MP Fuziah Salleh’s main problem is the manipulative nature of her request. Her request was not made in June prior to when the IAEA said the Lynas LAMP was safe. Nor was it made in the six months that followed the activities list amendment in June. If Kuantan safety was her concern, where has her request been for the last six months? Obviously, her actions are manipulative politics as usual. She is once again placing personal political gain above the concern of the people she represents.

Her failure to address the issue with the IAEA, the Malaysian government or AELB suggests this is a clear attempt to place her personal objectives ahead of the credibility of these key institutions reviewing LAMP safety. And if her concern was safety it is a total abdication of her responsibilities as a representative to use these concerns as a clear delay tactic.

The Malaysian government and AELB have made safety their first priority from the beginning. These matters have been considered and are being considered at this time. Suggesting otherwise makes the claim that there is no point to any LAMP review except Fuziah’s personal manipulations.

Kuantan deserves greater respect than this. The people will receive a public report from AELB. The point of this report is to evaluate safety. The IAEA has determined safety and made recommendations that have been adopted. These actions are being done with integrity and with considerable effort. All sides have respected these reviews to this point. Fuziah Salleh’s current actions undermine that respect.

If Fuziah’s priority is safety she should request the DEIA be made part of the operational license review. Trying to apply the issue six months late when every opportunity was given to mention the concern before LAMP’s pre-operation approval was likely, is just self-centered politics. The entire process need not coward to such manipulations. If the priority is truly safety, the current course is the best effort to accomplish that goal.
