"Anti-Lynas gatecrashers cause ruckus at rare earth talk"

KUANTAN: A commotion broke out at a talk on rare earth when the organisers refused to allow some 30 members of the Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas movement from entering the venue.

The members were turned away at the talk organised by the Kuantan Amateur Basketball Association (Kaba), the Kuantan Hakka Association and the Kuantan Hainan Association at a hotel here on Friday evening.

However, the movement's chairman Tan Bun Teet and two other members were allowed entry.

The organisers then blocked the door with a stick and a chair.

When asked, Kaba president Ranndy Yap said the talk, which was conducted by three rare earth and nuclear experts from China, was a closed-door event for members of the associations only.

�We allowed their chairman to attend as a show of respect.

�The others were not invited and were gatecrashers,� he said.

The group later confronted a security guard, who had told them not to loiter at the hotel lobby.

They then gathered outside the hotel's main entrance.

After the talk, the group surrounded Hakka association president Yap Yoon Fock and demanded to know his stand on the rare earth refinery issue.

A Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas member accused Yap of betraying the Chinese community by bringing the experts but not allowing the public to ask questions.

Kuantan Hainan Association president Datuk Jack How said later the talk was to explain the pros and cons of rare earth processing.

He said it should not be misunderstood as a show of support for Lynas.

The group dispersed after shouting slogans outside the hotel.
