Logistics actually favour China, as supply chain management and logistics are far more important (in terms of cost, administration, complexity and risk) than shipping of finished product.
The only good reason to have a factory in India or Thailand would be to avoid tariffs and other trade barriers, as both countries are highly protectionist. I'm wondering if this is actually the issue with Bird Group - that they are perhaps finding that, after tariffs, they cannot import at a competitive price point.
It is important to remember that tariffs are designed to protect less efficient domestic manufactures. Setting up ones own facility in such a place, means operating in that less efficient economic environment - poor infrastructure, long supply chains (largely imported), endemic corruption, stifling bureaucracy etc. I'm sure it's not worth it.
