Narcotics Abuse And Addiction And Its Side Effects

    July 24, 2012 author Health & Fitness[Goodarticle.com]
    Oxycodone and its uses:

Oxycodone is a narcotic sedative. It is used for treating mild to severe pain. It is found to be beneficial for treating chronic pains of several types to make better the life’s quality. It is sometimes advised as an alternative to morphine for controlling pain caused by cancer. Though there is no evidence that it is better than morphine in controlling cancer pain, it results in less sedation, respiratory depression, pruritus and nausea. For that reason, it is mostly better tolerated than morphine. It can also be advised as a substitute to other opiods to cure severe diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome if other drugs fail to cure.

Is Oxycodone addictive and how does addiction take place?

Although oxycodone is a valuable painkiller, it has a strong habit forming potential. It can cause physical dependence or outright oxycodone abuse and addiction because it is tremendously habit forming. When used in combination with other drugs, oxycodone presents higher addiction threats.

Oxycodone dependency and addiction is frequently caused when a person takes more of oxycodone than was called for. They take too much quantity and/or use it for a too long period. In in both of these cases, their physician was not careful enough. He didn’t make sure the individual understand how addictive oxycodone can be.. Unfortunately there are a lot of doctors who don’t understand how easily oxydone addiction or dependence can happen.

    Oxycodone addiction side effects:

The generally known side effects comprise memory loss, fatigue, constipation, dizziness, nausea, lightheadedness, headache, dry mouth, anxiety, itching, and heavy sweating. A few individuals have also experienced loss of appetite, nervousness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, urine retention, and hiccups. Even though these symptoms show up in fewer than five percent of individuals abusing oxycodone. Infrequently, the drug can result in enlarged prostate gland, impotence, and decreased testosterone discharge.

In case of overdose or in individuals sensitive to opiates, oxycodone can result in shallow breathing, cold, clammy skin, respiratory arrest, circulatory collapse, and even death.

    Withdrawal Signs:

There is a very high risk of suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms if an individual gives up use of oxycodone suddenly. Therefore use should be discontinued slowly rather than abruptly. The symptoms of oxycodone withdrawal may include anxiety, panic attack, insomnia, nausea, muscle pain, muscle weakness, flu, and fevers.
