Overnight Mr Barroso told The Australian that surely Ms Gillard must recognise the efforts the EU was making.
He said the Prime Minister must acknowledge Europe was already "doing a lot" to boost growth and consolidate public finances.
Ms Gillard immediately sought to defuse the row and issued a statement claiming she "welcomed the steps Europe had taken to address its economic challenges".
