IT will be fun to see who Gavin Jennings manages to find for the board of the $5.1 million Stolen Generations Organisation he announced yesterday.
You see, Jennings, state Aboriginal Affairs Minister, has vowed to hire members of the "stolen generations". Hmm. It was only two years ago that a Stolen Generations Taskforce set up by Jennings tried to find some such members itself.
It did track down 30 who might fit the bill, although only 16 came to the interviews. But one said his real beef was that he'd been sent to boarding school. Others were cranky at parents or grandparents for not "disclosing or encouraging" their "Aboriginality".
Five said they'd been adopted out after being born to single mothers, as happened to many such babies of any race. Said one: "My mum said she voluntarily gave me up, no one came and stole me away."
In fact, the taskforce couldn't cite a single case of a truly "stolen" child. It added: "In Victoria . . . there was no formal policy for removing children."
But Jennings still insisted on creating his Stolen Generations Organisation. More millions for a myth.
At least this time we'll have the fun and instruction of watching him try to find a truly stolen local, to run an outfit unlikely to find any either. Almost worth it.
